At around 9 o’clock on 14th Dec 2012, in a classroom of Sandy Hook Elementary School, 20 children and 6 adult staff members died from the sudden mass shooting.

Let nature create a unique memorial space, which is “the World in my Eyes” with perpetual continuity. It shows that the staff members were telling children of every ordinary happy day in the enchanting years in their eyes just before the shooting; it expresses the perpetual wishes to the world from the 26 children and adults before as well as after the shooting: I believe that the world in my eyes will become warmer and filled with love; it also implies that people alive still have hope and faith in life.

All the minor victims are between 6 and 7 years old. These children see life with their eyes, while the adults see truth, kindness and beauty through these innocent eyes. The memorial space is also supposed to deliver to the world this kind of beautiful memory and positive spirit.

“The World in my Eyes” is a unique and quiet memorial space, which cannot be created by architects alone because nature is the more important designer. Respecting environment, using natural elements such as original space feature and trees in the scene, and adding the man-made water creation take shape a pure earth art: “ Eyes Looking into the Sky ”.

As its visitors are probably the family members of victims, citizens and travellers, “Eyes Looking into the Sky” should be a memorial public space with high level inclusiveness. Meanwhile, it joins the groves, the lake and the park quietly and naturally to create an integrated landscape.

In this memorial space, the sky, the trees, the water surface and the existing 26 marble benches constitute a “classroom space” perfectly blending into nature, which recalls the wonderful moment one second before the shooting. This classroom has the blue sky as its roof, the flowers and trees as its walls and the crystall water surface as its floor...The classroom space changes with seasons...In one word, this is a space which continues growing with time. The classroom space is a perpetual extension to the wonderful moment which the 26 children and staff members enjoyed together before they died.

When visitors stand in this classroom in nature and beside the “ Eyes Looking into the Sky”, they can hear the sounds of water and see “the World in my Eyes”.
